The Overview

Organic Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of getting your website to rank in the top results on search engines for keywords that relate to your product/service. The "organic" search results are ones that Google, Yahoo, and MSN's algorhythm determine to be the most relevant to the keyword search.

The top 10 listings in the organic search results are the prime real estate on the search engine. These listings attract 80-85% of the visitors. Obtaining top 10 rankings in the major search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN) will allow you to capture 86-90% of the total market available.

With all of that potential, there are also several downfalls. First, what reason should Google rank your hotel webpage over the 79,500,000 other hotel webpages it has in its index?

Secondly, companies that offer "SEO services" or claim the be "experts" in this field do not give a guarantee. If they do, run away. Why? SEO is the art of manipulating the search engine algorhythms. No one controls how these algorhythms work, what factors affect the algo, or when they change. No one has preferential treatment or special partnership to get "to the top of Google" or any other search engine.

Third, if you are abile to get ranked, will the traffic be targeted to your product/service? If your website ranks for the term "convention center", and you're located in Las Vegas, and the searcher wants to go to Chicago, that will not help.

Con's

  • getting ranked. There's a reason why no legitimate SEO company gives a guarantee - results are out of their hands.
  • Getting ranked in the wrong search engines - being ranked #1 on Billy Bob's search engine doesnt mean you'll get people to your site. It may, however, cover enough of your contract for the SEO company to say they've fulfilled their duty.
  • Getting ranked for the wrong keywords - ranking for words that people do not search for is like placing a billboard in the middle of the desert. If no one is there actively looking for the keywords you have ranked for, you will not get visitors to your site. Once again, this can fulfill the agreement for your SEO company.
  • Mixing organic search visitors with your other forms of marketing. Unless you seperate this traffic from your other sources, you will not know if the visitors are converting to actions and becoming profitable.
